Our Lord Jesus Christ in Luke 14:28-30 tells us For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

This year we all have a goal, big or small. However a lot of us with these goals are not really thinking about our lord’s question. The interesting thing is that at the end of the year these same people wonder why they are still at the same spot and have not gotten what they set out to get at the beginning of the year. To achieve our dreams and build a desired future there is a need to pay close attention to what our lord is saying in Luke 14:28-30. Paying close attention to what our lord said requires us to;

  1. Evaluate the Past: For which of you, intending to build…  How did we get to where we are today? What choices have we made that resulted in our current position in life? What are the perceived needs that we want to satisfy?
  2. Assess the Present: … sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost… What is my situation now? Do I need what I think I need? Why do I need what I think I need? What will it cost me in terms of time, talent, treasures and relationship? Is it worth it?
  3. Plan a desired Future: … Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it…  Is the dream worth my attention and sacrifice? Is it in accordance with the revealed will of God for my life? Do you have a plan, is it God’s Plan?
  4. Rest on His Promises. Matthew 6:33   but seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Does your plan originate from Him? Was it designed by Him, does it include Him? Is He facilitating it? Psalm 127:1-2 tells us Except the Lord build the house; they labor in vain that build it….

The cost of a desired future is not cheap, as we have been made to believe. The steps outlined above are difficult for those of us accustomed to instant results and gratification. But those who are willing to pay the price will reap the harvest of a desired future in 2017.
